IBM has announced a new chip architecture that integrates nearly 100 billion transistors onto a chip the size of a fingernail, roughly doubling transistor density compared to its previous generation. The company claims this yields significant improvements in compute performance and energy efficiency, dubbing it the world’s first sub-1 nanometer chip technology for AI data centers.
However, the sub-1 nanometer label refers to the performance equivalent of physically smaller transistors, not actual features below that scale, due to manufacturing limitations. IBM Research director Jay Gambetta described the innovation as a meaningful leap toward more powerful computing without a proportional increase in energy consumption.
