Anthropic has unveiled the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a set of standardized drivers that allow AI agents to interface with and control a wide range of physical devices. Currently available as a research preview, MHS is designed to help scientists integrate lab equipment more easily by providing a common interface and data-sharing format, potentially cutting experimental setup time from weeks or months to hours or minutes.
The effort was inspired by a neuroscientist at HHMI Janelia who used a custom interface to coordinate lasers, microscopes, and cameras in a memory-formation experiment. Anthropic believes the same approach could eventually enable AI to run virtually any scientific experiment.
