EU Warns Meta: Disable Addictive Features Like Autoplay and Infinite Scroll or Face Heavy Fines

The European Commission has preliminarily found that Meta's features such as autoplay, infinite scroll, and highly personalized content recommendations are addictive. The EC stated that Meta failed to adequately assess the risks these features pose to the physical and mental wellbeing of users, including minors and vulnerable adults.

The commission noted that these design elements shift the brain into 'autopilot mode' and encourage compulsive use. As a result, Meta faces the threat of massive fines if it does not disable these features.
