EU warns Meta to disable autoplay and infinite scroll or face massive fines

The European Commission has preliminarily found that Meta's use of autoplay, infinite scroll, and highly personalized content recommendations on Facebook and Instagram is addictive. The commission stated that Meta failed to adequately assess the risks these features pose to the physical and mental wellbeing of users, including minors and vulnerable adults.

It warned that such design fuels compulsive scrolling by putting the brain into 'autopilot mode,' leading to unhealthy habits. Meta now faces the threat of massive fines unless it disables these features.
