Hidden AirTag Reveals Amazon Is Destroying Rare Books to Train AI

For over a year, booksellers suspected AI companies were buying large lots of rare books, scanning them, and then destroying them. 404 Media proved this by hiding an AirTag inside a rare book from a bulk order and tracking it to an Amazon AI training facility in Las Vegas, where a team was tearing books from their spines and scanning pages.

A warehouse door logo showing a T. rex about to devour a book highlighted the operation's insensitivity to backlash over destructive book scanning. Amazon declined to comment on the findings, providing a statement that did not specifically address AI training.
