Viral videos from the second World Humanoid Robot Games, held in Beijing from August 22–26, show humanoid robots beating Usain Bolt’s 100-meter record—but also crashing into barriers, tumbling, and some catching fire. The event also tested robots in kung fu, dance, kickboxing, soccer, and table tennis.
In practical chores such as washing and hanging laundry, robots lagged behind typical human working speeds. Organizers, including Chinese state media and the Beijing city government, aim to showcase humanoid robots’ commercial potential as China’s robotics industry rapidly develops.
