IBM has released Granite 4.2, the latest addition to its open-weight LLM family, with 3B, 8B, and 30B parameter versions designed for download and self-hosting. All variants use a decoder-only architecture and offer a native 128,000-token context window.
The 8B and 30B models received additional agentic reinforcement learning to improve tool use, including terminal commands, web search, and external tools. The 3B model also supports tools but lacks the same specialized training.
