AI companies’ widespread scraping of the public web for training data has already prompted lawsuits and technical countermeasures. Designers Isaque Seneda and Gabriel Abrucio created ShieldFont, a typeface that uses ligatures to render alternate words in the underlying HTML as the intended onscreen text. This lets publishers give human readers a perfectly readable page while serving AI scrapers a subtly altered, nonsensical version of the content.
